Elvis, Michael and Adam?

Remember the movie "Oh, God! You Devil!"

Back in 1984, it sounded pretty farfetched and quite possibly out of the "Twilight Zone," but George Burns was back at it again in his second "Oh God" movie. This time however he played both sides or in other words he was the "ultimate (Yin and Yang) of the Universe." George Burns played "God" as usual and he evil step twin "Satan!" This movie was the typical "musician selling his soul to the Devil" fairy tale (gone bad).

It all started with the struggling singer/songwriter "Bobby Shelton" who's at the end of his rope. He was protected by a prayer from his father early in life, when he was very sick and likely to die. But now Bobby prays; i guess that's the phrase, to whoever is listening; "I'd sell my soul to the devil to make it in this business. Just for the chance." Long story short "Bobby Shelton" becomes "Billie Wayne," [the new pop/rock icon]. There is a problem with this arrangement between the "Red Demon" Harry O. Tophat [Burns] and Wayne, because he now has a contract to fulfill. Guess what happens at the end of the contract? That's right, his life as an "iconic-superstar" is over! In fact he's sold his soul to the Devil and is supposed to die! That’s scary stuff and can only happen in the movies, right? Guess again!

Back to "Elvis, Michael and Adam"

As American Idol Season 8 heated up, everyone from the media were reporting of the similarities between Adam Lambert and Elvis Presley. You could just see it in the "eyes." Adam would never admit that he looked like Elvis. All he could say was that "he didn't think he sounded like him." I don't think Adam and Elvis sound anything alike either. They both have their own unique style and sound.

I kept reading blog after blog about things that seemed peculiar with these two singers. Both had blonde-ish hair naturally. Both had an interest in music at a very early age, I think around "10." Both lead a life of "controversy." Elvis with his gyrating hips that kept his lower half from being viewed on TV and Adam Lambert with his "questionable" sexual preference. Was he gay or was he straight? Both singers took “second place” in a singing contest where their singing talents clearly deserved “first.”

It wasn't until June 25th, 2009 that I started to really think about this. I heard the unsettling news of Michael Jackson's untimely death. After my first initial shock I began to "Google" his name and learn more. I listened to video after video. I watched performance after performance. Then it hit me like a shot! This guy [Michael Jackson] had the same dynamic ability to mesmerize his audience just like the late and talented "Elvis Presley."

Now I was putting 2 and 2 together and getting 16! Think about this. Elvis was born in 1935. he became popular in his teenager days but not an icon until much later in life. When he began his role as the "King of Rock and Roll," he reigned for some time. His stage performances were flawless leaving girls sobbing and desperately trying to climb up on his stage. A few years prior to his death in 1977, Elvis began slipping from the radar. He was overweight and didn't have the ability to perform to his usual potential. He became a recluse in his personal life, keeping to his self. His supposed prescription drug abuse became apparent in his performances. He died in 1977 and drugs were reported to have played a part.

Today I stumbled upon a blog written by "Lisa Marie Presley." Lisa and Michael Jackson were married for a short time. Lisa wrote this blog shortly after Michaels death. The blog is dated for the 26th, so I guess it was the following day. In her "MySpace" page Lisa mentions that 14 years ago, her and Michael had a conversation "about life in general." She continued to talk about how Michael kept questioning about her father’s death. She said "I can't recall the exact subject matter but he may have been questioning me about the circumstances of my Father[‘]s Death.” Lisa added another quote from Michael stating "I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did." When Lisa tried to deter Michael from saying the things he said, "he just shrugged his shoulders and nodded almost matter of fact as if to let me [Lisa] know, he knew what he knew and that was kind of that."

Michael died 14 years after that conversation with his [at that time] wife, Lisa Marie Presley. It is very eerie that Michael’s untimely death greatly mimicked the late and great “King of Rock and Roll” Elvis Presley. Michael had acquired a similar iconic nick name, the “King of Pop!” Their lives and death were almost in parallel. Elvis became the “King” until the he began to fade in the late 70’s, right up until his death. Michael Jackson as the child superstar began rising in popularity and it was after Elvis died that Michael revolutionized the music video as we know it now, beginning with “Thriller.” Michaels “true”rise to fame was after Elvis passed away.

For the last several years Michael Jackson too, has been living his life in a recluse state. He was only in the media when he was out of character with lawsuits and rumors of child molestation charges. As Michael was fading and ultimately ending his career and unprecedented iconic reign, Adam Lambert had been preparing for his rise to fame in a very similar fashion. He was a child star and at the age of 10, he discovered he had a voice that only angels could match. He struggled while working in the theater and attempting to work his way into the music business. He struggled and couldn’t find a way, until one night as he was contemplating life, he found the answer. His answer was to try out for American Idol. As Adam was making his name known to America and the world, Michael Jackson was fading away and on June 25th, 2009 Michael Jackson left us.

Now that Michael Jackson is gone, will Adam Lambert take the baton and become the next “King” of…Watch the video below from the "American Idol" finale. There are a couple of things to pay close attention to. First of all Adam's performance is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Secondly watch his facial expression and eyes as he sings the last verse; do you see Elvis? Then listen to what "Paula Abdul" says. Paula says to Adam after he finishes his song, "not only that, you [Adam] look like a superstar up there and whatever happens I'm in awe of your talent, whatever happens with this Idol journey-I know that with every fiber of my being you are going to be iconic [pause] yes you are! Not only are these comments important, but check the name of the song Adam is singing, "A Change is Gonna Come!" Does Adam know more than he is letting on?

Judge for yourself and please leave me comments.

Wow! What insight... Very thought provoking!!! I can only imagine the whys and how's after your blog... Makes me wonder "why" some people have such talents and fall from grace into despair and the one's who want these talents are in awe...never realizing we are all the same, from beginning and ultimately in the very end...death is the great equalizer...

Love and Peace,

Amazing blog! I loved how you tied in "Oh God, You Devil" - very clever! The death of Michael Jackson is so tragic and sad. The King of Rock and the King of Pop will live on in our hearts and souls especially through their music.

I had chills watching your video of Adam singing "A Change Is Going To Come". I do believe that it is a new dawn, it's a new day and maybe he will be the King of Glam? It amazes me how much Adam looks like Elvis. It's so strange how Elvis, Michael, and Adam are entwined in so many ways. Michael with marrying Elvis' daughter and Adam who looks like he could be Elvis' son. And Adam sang a Michael Jackson song on AI and mouthed the words - I love him, when Kara said she hoped Michael was watching.

You put so much time and thought into this blog - excellent!!

Take care! It's nice blogging with you again! (They may cancel my hub - since I have no idea how to put it all together. I'll have to ask my daughter to help me!!)

Thanks for the comments. To me the Elvis, MJ and Adam thing is really interesting to think of the possibilities. I am so looking forward to Adam's reign

Adam will unmistakeably be the king of something as he has the charisma and talent to take him there. I sincerely hope he can keep his wits about him and not eventually fall into the depths of depression both Elvis and Michael seemed to have experienced. These great talents come along so infrequently, which of course is what makes them so special and unforgettable. May Adam rise to his calling and be remembered as an icon, not to replace Elvis or Michael, but as their equal.

Very thought provoking and original, rv! Really enjoyed the analogy of three famed icons. Also interesting how we can tie common threads through the circumstances of those we idolize, and in the end find something very uncommon about their unique appeal. Thanks for a great hub!
